How can I configure the Delete key to erase the character next to the cursor?

To make the Delete key erase the charater at the current cursor position, you must edit the keymap. In the Windows GUI client: Select Edit > Settings > Keyboard > Edit > Add.... In the Keymap Editor dialog, select the following: Shortcut key: del (press the Delete key) Function: string String: \24 Save changes and exit. The changes come into effect after the terminal is reset from View > Reset Terminal.
