I have had success with setting up key exchanges between accounts I have on various Linux servers, and I can now use scp between them. The versions of Tectia are slightly different when I enter "ssh -V" on the command line :

  • SSH Tectia Client 6.1.0 on i686-pc-linux-gnu
  • SSH Tectia Client 6.1.8 on x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu

To do this, I used ssh-keygen-g3 with no passphrases and then scpg3 to put the .pub keyfile on the remote server in my $HOME/.ssh2/authorized_keys folder. After that, I can use scp to copy to the server without any password or passphrase.

But now I'm having difficulties getting it set up for one of these Linux servers to do the same to a HP-UX server. The HP-UX servers are running a different version of Tectia :

  • SSH Tectia Server 4.4.8 on ia64-hp-hpux11.23

When I follow the same steps putting my public key from Linux in the HPUX $HOME/.ssh2/authorized_keys folder, I still get a prompt for a password when I run scp on the Linux server to copy to HP-UX. If I immediately repeat the command, the scp doesn't prompt for the password again. But if I wait a short time to repeat the command, it prompts again for the password. It's as if SSH remembers the password for a short time, but discards it after a few seconds.

I am not the admin for any of these servers and can't change any root setup. The admins are an inaccessible team, so no help is available from them. Is it possible to get a passwordless key exchange working between these two versions with just my user accounts ?

I found the answer and got it working.

Dug through the other questions related to public keys. Many talked about what I already knew for the 6.1.x clients. But came across one where the answer mentioned said this halfway down:

If the server is an older version of Tectia Server (4.x) then this requires a bit more work.

Following the instructions there, I was able to get the older version to work.
