I would like to set the start up window size rows and columns so that the display is set to a proper width on start of the client, but I do not want the display to be confined to this with the "Fix Terminal width.." option.

What can set this properly ?

Use "Save Layout"

Try this:

After setting the window size the way you like it, just click on "File->Save layout" Next time you start the client it will use the layout you saved. This can be saved per profile as well.
